Nouveau Enamel & Diamond Fleur De Lis Pendant
Nouveau Enamel & Diamond Fleur De Lis Pendant
SKU:88800929
This fleur-de-lis pendant dates back to the turn of the 20th century, when French design gained prominence in the United States, particularly in the realm of haute couture. This piece was made as a watch pin and would have been worn upside down to hold a small pocket watch. We converted this piece into a pendant, although it can be worn in reverse; however, it is more wearable this way. As a pendant, it features a 1.75-inch drop, which is particularly beautiful when worn on the neckline or paired with a long chain over a sweater. While not hallmarked, the 18k gold, use of enamel, rose cut diamonds, and classic French design allow us to attribute it to having been made in France. The textures — shiny gold, matte enamel, and sparkling diamonds — combine to create an intriguing look that we love.
We also appreciate the symbolism of the fleur-de-lis, which has long been associated with France. It is technically a stylized lily that came to symbolize Catholic saints, which was then incorporated into the coats of arms for the French nobility. Over time, it has come to represent all things France and French extraction, including, here in the US, the city of New Orleans. From a design standpoint, it is highly popular in architecture and clothing design, making a powerful impression on this particular piece of jewelry.
Details: 18k yellow gold pendant with .10ctw rose cut diamonds (SI IJ) and black enamel accents- minor wear to enamel is present, but it does not detract from the piece. French, circa 1900.
