Nouveau Enamel & Diamond Fleur De Lis Pendant

This fleur-de-lis pendant dates back to the turn of the 20th century, a time when French design gained prominence in the United States, particularly in haute couture. Originally made as a watch pin, it would have been worn upside down to hold a small pocket watch. We have since converted this piece into a pendant, although it can still be worn as originally intended; however, it is more practical as a pendant.

The pendant features a 1.75-inch drop, making it particularly beautiful when worn at the neckline or paired with a long chain over a sweater. Although it is not hallmarked, the 18k gold, enamel, rose-cut diamonds, and classic French design allow us to attribute it to being made in France. The combination of textures—shiny gold, matte enamel, and sparkling diamonds—creates an intriguing look that we find truly admirable. 

We also appreciate the symbolism of the fleur-de-lis, which has long been associated with France. It is technically a stylized lily that came to symbolize Catholic saints and was later incorporated into the coats of arms of the French nobility. Over time, it has come to represent all things French, including, in the United States, the city of New Orleans. From a design perspective, the fleur-de-lis is highly popular in both architecture and clothing design, making a powerful impression on this particular piece of jewelry. 

Details: 18k yellow gold pendant with 0.10ctw of rose cut diamonds (SI IJ) and black enamel accents. Minor wear to the enamel is present, but it does not detract from the overall appearance of the piece. French, circa 1900.
