This striking black opal pendant displays a vivid kaleidoscope of color—neon blue, teal, purple, and flashes of green—evoking the iridescence of a peacock's feathers. Sourced from Lightning Ridge, this genuine black opal is prized for its deep, coal-dark body tone, which enhances the gem's vibrant play of color. In natural light, a distinctive ribbon flash pattern emerges, with bands of shifting hues sweeping across the stone like a bolt of lightning from east to west.
We believe that this piece originally functioned as a pin or ring made of platinum and was later transformed into a pendant in the 1950s by adding a white gold bail. The opal is set in a delicate bezel and is accented by collet-set diamonds featuring classic Art Deco milgrain details.
Details: 14k white gold and platinum pendant with a 3.00ct oval Australian black opal and .06ct old European cut diamonds (SI GH), dating from circa 1925.
